Democracy Is Not A Spectator Sport

 Throughout the month of May, here in Tennessee all eyes were on the fallout from The Voting Rights Act being weakened by the Trump-stacked Supreme Court. Literally within hours of this ruling, the TN GOP supermajority had brazenly announced their plan to finally get rid of the state's lone remaining "blue" district surrounding Memphis.

Citizens from all across the South flooded into Nashville to voice their objections. But despite days of passionate protests at the Capitol, ultimately our legislative districts were rejigged -- with Memphis split into three separate districts -- in a blatant attack on voters of color.Multiple lawsuits are pending challenging this extreme gerrymandering, but early indications are that the state will try to drag out the litigation until we’re forced to use the new map.With important elections looming as soon as this July/August, simply hoping the lawsuits are successful is not our best strategy. Instead, we must proactively fight back by encouraging more people to register to vote -- and then actually VOTE -- in our elections.Tennessee has one of the worst voter registration and voter turnout rates in the country. The good news is: if we can change that, we can win.Why do you think our state's voter turnout is so abysmal?

Davidson Co. Democratic Party - Monthly Executive Committee Meeting - 6/23

Advocacy 101

There has never been a better time than NOW, to contact your representatives and weigh in on the issues of the day. When possible, picking up the phone and calling your reps is the always best way to influence policy. If you ever have the opportunity to visit your congressperson's office -- even better. Every representative's office tallies the calls they receive on either side of an issue, so even if you don't reach someone in person, your call is still making a difference. U.S. Senator for Tennessee, Marsha Blackburn, has infamously refused to hold Town Halls since 2017 (when she was a state rep) -- since so many people showed up in opposition to her policies. This year, she is beginning her run for Governor of Tennessee. Those of you who have tried to email her office know that the only response you get is being added to her spam email list -- so let's light up her phone lines instead!

Get The Word Out!

Fight the GOP’s extreme TN gerrymandering by registering to vote, and helping others register. Educate your friends and neighbors about what is at stake. Have conversations with those who might not always agree with you...they may be ready for a change. Support and vote for candidates (regardless of party) who can beat these cowards. They wouldn't have resorted to cheating unless they were scared. Let's give them something to be afraid of... The deadline to register to vote in this Summer's Primary Governor Race is July 7, so don't wait!Register to Vote NOW

Support Candidate Justin Pearson

Indivisible has officially endorsed Justin J. Pearson in the U.S. House of Representatives race in the newly drawn TN District 09. Pearson is the current State Rep in Memphis (District 86), and you may recognize him as one of the "Tennessee Three" who stood up to state Republicans in 2023. His strong voice and drive to protect his community has Republicans so worried, they've resorted to cheating to try to defeat him. Let's not let them.
